MERCEDES CUP, Stuttgart, Germany – Second seed Juan Mónaco has booked his place in the semi-finals on Friday after he defeated Slovenian qualifier Pavol Cervanek under damp conditions at the Mercedes Cup. The Argentine battled back in the second set to take the match 6-1, 7-5 in 1 hour and 37-minutes 6-1, 7-5.

The Slovakian qualifier proved to be a tricky customer and looked set to cause another upset (he defeated home crowd favourite Tommy Haas in the previous round) who was ahead in the second set 5-1 before Mónaco rallied back to victory.

The world No.14 Monaco is en route to lift another clay-court ATP World Tour title – possibly his third this year after lifting the trophy at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar and the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Next up for the 28 year-old is Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez who defeated German wild card Dustin Brown comprehensively 6-0, 6-3 in 59 minutes. The two clay court specialists haven’t met since 2010 at Indian Wells and it is Mónaco who leads the head-to-head 3-1.
