In Palermo, Laura Robson, who was 18 years old this year, has literally exploded at the tournament. She is a player of unquestionable potential and the Brit has chosen Sicily as a place from which to start a more than likely surge up the WTA rankings. On Friday she faced the most experienced and highest ranked player at the tournament – Carla Suarez Navarro.

Robson barely faltered during the match as she won the first set 6-4, but her challenge mounted as the Spaniard began her resurgence by taking the second set 6-2.  The young Brit kept her composure as she eventually closed out the third set after breaking in the ninth game and took the final set 6-3.

In the evening Sara Errani progressed through the tournament after defeating Romanian Alexandra Cadantu with a comfortable 6-2 6-2 victory. Her break point percentage was excellent at 100% as she successfully broke on all six break point opportunities.

In the semifinals Errani will play against another player from Romania, Irina Camelia Begu, who defeated the Spanish Cabeza Candela on Friday afternoon.
