UMAG, Croatia – Fourth seed Marcel Granollers surprised friend and compatriot Fernando Verdasco on the clay courts of Umag in Croatia on Saturday after knocking the top seed out of the tournament to steal a place in the final with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory in 2 hours and 52-minutes.

After taking the first set comfortably, Granollers was forced into a second set tie-break which he lost and failed to start the third set off convincingly after he was broken early, but the world No.24 regrouped in time and dominated the rallies winning the last six games in a row to book his place in the final and will be hoping to lift his fourth ATP trophy of his career.

Standing in the Spaniard’s way of the trophy is home crowd favourite Marin Cilic who ousted the defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov in two sets 7-5, 6-2.

It was not all plane-sailing for the Croat as it was the Ukrainian who had the edge in the first set with an opportunity to serve out the first set at 5-4 but was broken by Cilic who then reeled off the next three games in a row. The second set was straightforward for the world No.15 who continued to display consistent and well-timed rallies before securing victory 6-2 in the second set.

The Croat is in good form after winning the grass courts of the AEGON championships in June and will be hoping to lift a second title of the year in his home country.
