Roger Federer was a pretty happy chappy yesterday as he spoke to the media after he won the first round match against Donald Young.  He was also asked how he feels about Djokovic and the challenge he creates for the top spot in the world rankings.

“I have been on the Tour for so many years, it is normal to have obtained many victories and many defeats.  Last year when I lost against Djokovic here I was disappointed but not mad at that because Novak played beautifully, he deserved the win. He was the man of the match and I from that, got only positive things. He is the favorite, not me … He has won more matches on the hard courts all year and he is the defending champion “

“I’m happy to be here in New York, I’m enjoying it very much. I heard that I have a record here in the evening matches having won 22 of 22 games even if it is not true because I lost the final against Del Potro and it ended at night (laughs).”

Young is a good player. From what I could see he was able to make great shots. The only advice I can give him is to always work hard. The games are not always the ones played on the center courts in front of 20 thousand people, the real challenges are in the secondary courts. To get to the top the only roads are those working hard, alongside a good coach and finding comfort in the family, as well as to have fun when you play. Donald has been in the top 40 but I’m sure he could easily be in the top 20 in the world.”
